Detroit Diesel 12V-71T engine overhaul

Prior Power technicians completed a full engine overhaul on a Detroit Diesel 12V-71T engine.

The engine, a 12-cylinder, 14-litre, twin turbo-charged, two-stroke, is a type commonly used to start gas turbine-powered generators onboard offshore installations. It was being serviced by our offshore technicians when a fault with several of the cylinder liners was identified and reported to the client.

As the fault was investigated, the scope of work required increased to the point where it was not feasible to be completed offshore due to very restrictive working access and limited facilities to break the engine in properly before return to service.

The engine was dismantled and transported onshore to our base in Great Yarmouth for a complete overhaul.

The engine was fully stripped, cleaned to bare metal, and dimensionally inspected. Once the inspection process was complete, a full list of parts required to return the engine to service was submitted to the client. Once approved, the rebuild process began using a combination of new, reconditioned and service exchange components, which included reconditioned cylinder heads, turbochargers, blowers, and new genuine Detroit components including cylinder kits, camshafts and all bearings. Genuine Detroit service exchange fuel injectors, fuel transfer, oil and coolant pumps were also used as part of the engine overhaul.

Competing the work, Prior Power Technician Mark said,

Customer-witnessed testing took place at our in-house test bay before painting and shipping back to the platform in the North Sea for our offshore technicians to reassemble, test and commission.

With positive feedback from the customer, this was a successful project completed by the team on schedule.
